I have a hard time with the in-between seasons. It’s a rough time of year, this late autumn, early winter, or whatever it is you choose to call it. The leaves are off the trees, littered across the ground like a decaying brown carpet. Nights are extremely dark since there is no snow to reflect the moon, star or aurora light. And the days are increasingly dim, as the sun rises less and less above the horizon.
I’m not painting a pretty picture and on the occasional rainy and 36 degree day like most of yesterday, it isn’t lovely, not at all. But then, those clouds clear, and the crisp evening air flows in, stars appear overhead, and some nights, the aurora too emerges from its hiding place in the stratosphere. Last night was one of those evenings.
The aurora appeared just as soon it dark enough to see the stars. I headed out to a small pond a few minutes from my home in hopes of getting some reflection shots. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, a fairly busy road runs next to the pond, and many of my images, are artistically polluted with blurred tail lights. Here are a few:
