Runners

Each fall Fairbanks hosts the Equinox Marathon. It’s a trail run that climbs more than 3500ft over the course of the 26.2 mile race. I’ve run it a couple of times myself, never quickly. But this year, rather than joining the self-flagellation, I went to the start to make portraits of some of the runners. The original idea was to take images of the same runners both before and after the race but, for a number of reasons, that didn’t happen. I’ll settle for these pre-race images.

I used an off-camera snooted flash, underexposed the background substantially in camera and then used the brush tool in Lightroom to bring the background down even further. I kind of like the effect, but I suspect the strobists out there could give me some ideas how to improve the next round.
